Aims:

The aim of the study programme of the Doctoral Academic Studies in Biomedical Sciences is to form highly competent scientific workers of different specialized and professional profiles, who are primarily competent to conduct independent scientific research, as well as team scientific research. During their studies, students acquire the highest level of knowledge, develop the ability to think creatively and critically, as well as to understand current problems and their solutions, which qualifies them for scientific research and highly professional work. Extensive and complex fundamental and practical knowledge should provide future doctors of science with competencies for independent but also team scientific work, management and leadership in research teams and management of national and international projects, quality scientific communication, application of knowledge in practice, and transfer of knowledge to younger researchers and the wider social community. Students are expected to acquire the ability to follow and select relevant scientific literature, while assessing its scientific value, as well as the ability to understand and present scientific information.

Curriculum

The Doctoral Academic Studies in Biomedical Sciences last for 3 years (6 semesters) during which a student can acquire 180 ECTS in total (60 ECTS per academic year). The teaching plan of the study programme, during the first study year, provides students with four compulsory subjects common for all modules which aim to enable students to acquire basic knowledge in the methodology of scientific research work (Methodology of Scientific Research Work in Medicine, 15 ECTS), to acquaint themselves with the rules of writing, publishing and presenting their work at scientific and professional gatherings (Writing, Publishing and Evaluating Scientific Work, 10 ECTS), with fundamental ethical standards in science (Ethics in the Scientific Research Work, 5 ECTS), as well as to independently apply appropriate statistical methods for the needs of scientific work (Application of Basic Statistical Methods in Biomedical Sciences, 5 ECTS). In the first study year, students choose a course from the elective group of a module which provides them with knowledge in current issues in a certain field of research. For each module 3-5 subjects are offered in the Elective course of module, among them student choose one. Elective course of module holds 20 ECTS. In the second study year, students are acquainted with and trained in the application of complex statistical methods within the compulsory course common for all modules called Application of Advanced Statistical Methods in Biomedical Sciences (5 ECTS). The teaching plan of the second year includes three groups of elective courses (Common elective course 1, 2 and 3): from the first group of shared elective courses, students choose a course which will be in close connection to the topic of their doctoral dissertation and holds 20 ECTS; from the second group, students choose a course which is in connection to the chosen methodology of research and holds 15 ECTS; and from the third group, students choose a course according to their affinities in future work and holds 5 ECTS. From each group student choose one subject. Mentioned three groups of subjects are common for all modules. In the first group 50 subjects are offered, in the second 8 and in the third 5. Students affirm the acquired knowledge by publishing results of research in the form of a minimum of one oral presentation given at a scientific gathering (Scientific Activities 1), that is, a minimum of one paper published in a scientific journal (Scientific Activities 2), being the first author. Subjects Scientific Activities 1 and 2 hold 5 ECTS, each. During the first and second study years, students are required to produce one seminar paper per year (Seminar Paper 1 and 2) concerning the chosen field of research. Both seminar papers are presented before the Programme Council of the module. By the defence of each seminar paper student earns 5 ECTS. The third study year includes activities concerning the preparation and defence of the doctoral dissertation (Topic of Doctoral Dissertation holds 20 ECTS and preparation and defence hold 40 ECTS).

Active teaching is realized through theoretical lectures and study research work (practical demonstrations, individual research, defence of seminar papers, review and analysis of data in literature, presentation and publication of individually acquired results), as well as through consultations with teachers, that is, advisers or mentors. The number of points for each course is determined according to the required tasks which students need to fulfil in order to accomplish the learning goals and expected outcomes. Within each course, teaching activities relevant for accomplishing learning goals and expected outcomes are defined, as well the time required for each teaching activity, so that the total work engagement of students in a given course corresponds with the number of points assigned to the course.

The doctoral dissertation is the final part of the study programme. The application for the doctoral dissertation topic is submitted and the dissertation is prepared during the second or third year of doctoral studies, and provides 60 ECTS in total.
